BACKGROUND

Installation companies attracted customers on the promise that solar panel systems were a fantastic way of saving money on energy bills whilst earning an income from energy companies from the electricity that was generated by the panels and then exported back to the grid.

These solar panel systems were expensive, so the installation companies encouraged customers to sign loan or credit agreements with banks to spread the cost of a number of years.

Customers were promised that that the savings and income received from the solar panel systems would more than cover the cost of system and earn the customer a profit. The most common promises were that the system would ‘pay for itself’ or that the system was ‘self-funding’.

These promises were exaggerated, and thousands of customers have received little or even no return on their investment.
